Gabe discovers the secret to the pancake

Well, Stephanie and I made a good go of it, that’s for sure. For more than a year now, Gabe has absolutely adored pancakes. We have a family tradition of Sunday brunch, and the little guy’s eaten pancakes, eggs and sausage for as long as I can remember. But, and here’s the trick, Stephanie and I have been keeping the syrup away from him. He’s been eating those pancakes plain — which is good for both his nutrition and his hygiene.Sadly, it seems that those days are over.This week, his awareness of people around him got just that much bigger. Even though I’ve been eating pancakes with syrup this whole time, only this week, Gabe suddenly realized that Daddy’s pancakes looked different than his pancakes. He got a taste of mine, and didn’t go back. Now he’s eating breakfast with his cousin Cami, and pointing at her syrup and asking, “I have this, please?”

All clear for take off!

Maybe some of you have already noticed them, but this pictures truly captures Gabe’s wings. We generally love Gabe’s hair, being all curly and cute, but when his wings flare out is when we are truly delighted. We’re sure that his wings will develop as he gets older and be integral in his life as a super-hero!

Gabe and Ian are out and about, away from the fridge and the faucet. Gabe drains his bottle dry…
Gabe: Water?
Ian: No, sweetie.
Gabe: Bok? (meaning: Milk)
Ian: No, Gabriel. I’m sorry.
Gabe: Um… Juice?
Ian: Ha ha ha. No, Gabriel. We’ll get something to drink when we get home.
Gabe: Um… Water?

And so, the cycle continues…

Gabe’s newest muppet sound: Dick Cheney

For several weeks now, one of Gabe’s favorite games it to make the signature noises of various muppets: cookie’s “am am am”, ernie’s laugh, count’s counting “one, two, ah ah ah”, and so forth. So, today we’re watching the Daily Show with John Stewart and he’s doing a (terrible) impersonation of Dick Cheney. Part of his impersonation if to start every sentence with a kind of squack “ah… Iraq is going fine.” or “ah… that’s top secret.” Gabe picked up on this sound almost immediately, and has now added it to his repetoire. We’ll see if it sticks, but for about twenty minutes, every time he saw a picture of Dick Cheney he’d make that squaking sound “ah”.

Heh.

The beginning of the Oedipal complex?

Recently Gabe gets jealous when Mommy and Daddy are hugging. It’s kind of fun. Tonight I was playing with Gabe on the bed when Steph came up to join us. As soon as I hugged her, though, Gabe started to whine and threw his whole body between us, until he was bear hugging Stephanie’s head. I wonder, when does the Oedipal complex start showing itself? Or am I the one with the issues — is there such as thing as a Liaus complex??

Gabe’s first lie?

So, as usual, I’m trying to put Gabe to bed and he doesn’t want to go down. Usually this involves him crying and squirming, and me singing and reading, until he gives in. But this time, something unusual happened. All of a sudden he got quiet and cheerful and pointed to his diaper changing table. He squeeked out his interrogative “mm?” sound, and pointed to his diaper.

“Well,” I thought, “he’s dirty and wants a diaper change before going to bed. Good boy.” So, I turned on the light and went to work. But no such luck. I popped him open and … totally clean. He was lying! In order to avoid going to bed, he totally tricked his old man into the one thing he knew would make me turn on the lights…

Oh my, this is the first of a long history of lies that Gabe is going to perpetrate over me.

Should I be offended?

Yesterday, completely inexplicably, Gabe turned to me and said “Daddy!” then started laughing hysterically. Then he said “Daddy!” again and burst into laughing again. This continued for about twenty minutes. I’m not sure what to make of it. On the one hand, it’s always a good time to hear Gabers laugh. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure that he was making fun of me somehow. That’s where my life is right now. My two-year-old son mocks me.

Gabe takes some important calls.
